Types of Jewellery Valuations
Only those specifically referred to on this page are described below
Further types will be mentioned on the Valuer's profile pages as there are several other types of appraisal reports, each with its own particular wording, purpose, objectives and resulting values.
Insurance Replacement (routinely requested) - This is a report containing a detailed description of an item, sufficient to support an estimate of the value on which insurance premiums will be set and should be the basis of establishing the value and limit of claim settlement at the time of an insured loss. Typically the resulting figure represents the cost of replacing the item from a jeweller, or some other market entity, that most usually deals in that type of jewellery.
Probate Appraisal (commonly requested) - These appraisals are prepared to help determine the value of a deceased’s estate to enable the calculation of any tax due to the CRA and settling of probate. The cited values of the jewellery, diamonds, gold etc represent the open market value of the items as of the date of death of the deceased.
You may have to look outside this area if you require a very specialised service that may be outwith the scope of a normal gem, jewellery and diamond appraisal, or if you require a jewellery expert or Gemmologist to travel to another country. Appraisal services such a jeweller's stock audit, Capital Gains assessments and certain types of evaluation for investigations by the CRA are handled by specialists on JAW but you may need to broaden your search.
