Symmetry Jewellery Valuation Specialists is an independent Australian jewellery valuation practice based on the Gold Coast and led by internationally qualified jewellery valuer and educator Kym Hughes.

With more than 35 years of professional experience, Symmetry provides independent jewellery and luxury watch valuations for insurance, family law, deceased estates, self-managed superannuation funds (SMSFs), private clients, jewellers and the insurance industry.

Every valuation is prepared using recognised valuation standards, current market research, evidence-based methodology and professional judgement to provide clients with accurate, independent and well-supported valuation advice.

Unlike many businesses involved in the jewellery trade, Symmetry does not buy, sell or repair jewellery. This independence ensures every valuation is completed solely in the client's best interests and free from conflicts of interest.

Professional Leadership

Kym Hughes is an internationally qualified independent jewellery valuer, educator and industry leader who has dedicated her career to advancing professional standards within the jewellery valuation profession.

She currently serves as President of the National Council of Jewellery Valuers (NCJV) Queensland Division and previously served as National President of the NCJV for more than two decades.

Kym is the co-author of Australia's nationally accredited Diploma of Applied Gemmology (Valuation) and continues to contribute to jewellery valuation education internationally through the Jewellery Valuers Association (United Kingdom).

She is also a member of the CIBJO Valuers Working Group, contributing to the ongoing development of international valuation standards and professional practice.

Kym is an international conference presenter who regularly shares expertise on jewellery valuation, professional standards and emerging issues affecting the valuation profession with audiences throughout Australia and internationally.

Professional development remains an ongoing commitment, ensuring valuation methodologies continue to reflect current market conditions, advances in gemmological science and evolving international best practice.

Kym's qualifications include:

• Fellow of the Gemmological Association of Great Britain (FGA)
• Fellow of the Gemmological Association of Australia (FGAA)
• Diploma in Diamond Technology (Dip DT)
• Diploma of Applied Gemmology (Valuation)
• HRD Antwerp Certified Diamond Grader
• Advanced training in synthetic, imitation, treated and fancy colour diamonds
• Advanced workshops in Jade, FTIR and UV-Visible Spectroscopy

Advanced Gemmological Technology

Through its sister company, Spectra Gem Laboratory, Symmetry has access to advanced analytical equipment including Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), UV-Visible Spectroscopy (UV-Vis) and high-powered gemmological microscopy.

These instruments assist in identifying synthetic gemstones, gemstone treatments and complex gemmological issues that may not be detected using conventional testing methods, providing clients with greater confidence in the valuation process.
