A few tips regarding jewellery value

You may have received a valuation from the jeweller who sold you your item of jewellery. It is a good idea to get your own appraisal and valuation from an Independent Jewellery Valuer. Sometimes we find that valuations supplied by the business who sold the item, can be a little inflated, as it gives the impression that the buyer received good value for money. An independent valuer's findings will be reported without bias as they have no vested interest in the item and report on the market activity prevailing in the whole area, not just from the jeweller who sold the item.

Having your valuable jewellery appraised is important for several reasons. It is good for you to know exactly what your prized pieces are worth, but you will also need a professionally prepared appraisal that comprehensively describes your jewellery and ascribes a value appropriate to the purpose of the valuation. This is especially important if you plan to take out jewellery insurance for high priced pieces, like your diamond engagement ring.

You may have to look outside the Plymouth area if you require a very specialised service that may be outwith the scope of a normal gem and jewellery appraisal, or if you require a jewellery expert or Gemmologist to travel to another country. Appraisal services such a jeweller's stock audit, Capital Gains assessments and certain types of evaluation for investigations by HMRC are handled by specialists on JAW but you may need to broaden your search.
